Our History

Hawkins Electric Co., Inc. was established in 1918 by Jay C, “Pop” Hawkins, who lived and worked in Hyattsville, MD, doing electrical repairs for local homeowners, riding his bicycle with a basket on front to carry his needed supplies.  Later his two sons, George and Frank, would join the company and it grew to include a retail store at 5022 Rhode Island Avenuein Hyattsville, selling and servicing large and small home appliances such as refrigerators, ranges, irons and mixers, as well as selling and servicing Lionel model trains.  The building also housed the offices for the management of the company’s residential new house construction and service work.  Eventually the father and sons would purchase a warehouse at 5604 Rhode Island Ave. and expanded to include commercial wiring and service work, including interstate lighting, traffic light control and parking gate controls installation.  In 1944 and 1945 the company would grow again, with the arrival of Joseph “Gus” Ingegneri and Ray Thompson, who both started working for Hawkins Electric Company after leaving the service in World War II.

In 1953 Frank and George wanted Hawkins Electric Co., Inc, to eliminate the residential electrical work, and they sold this portion of the business, along with the new house wiring service and the retail store, to Charles Wilson (who became store manager), Ray (service electrician) and Gus (new house electrician).  In 1953, the partners became stockholders with the incorporation of the business under the name of Hawkins Electric Service, Inc. In addition to the three stockholders, the employees included a helper for Gus, an appliance repairman, and Betty Thompson as the bookkeeper and store clerk.  Hawkins discontinued the selling of large appliances within a few years due to the opening of competing discount stores, but continued using their building as an office and a store for electrical supplies, appliance servicing, selling and servicing Lionel trains and managing residential electrical work.
Mr. Wilson retired due to poor health around 1960, leaving Ray and Gus as the remaining stockholders.  In turn, Gus resigned in April 1973, with Ray remaining as the sole stockholder. Then, in August 1974, Nevin and AI bought stock in the corporation and subsequently purchased a house and garage at 4307 Gallatin St in 1977 for use as an office and material storage, together with a second house at 4309 Gallatin for additional offices and storage.  The company continued doing residential new house and service work, but soon branched out into commercial electrical work.

Ray retired on Dec 31, 1990, redeeming his stock, with Nevin and AI as remaining stockholders.  The following year Al resigned; Nevin continued on with the business, and was joined in September 1991 by Eric, who was made an officer of the company, with Nevin as sole stockholder.  Under Eric's leadership, Hawkins did more commercial work, increased the volume of residential work and added to the number of employees.  In 1992, the company sold its 4309 Gallatin Street property and moved to the warehouse at 12126 Conway Road.  The following year the other Gallatin Street property was sold.

After Nevin’s death in 1997, the corporation went to Ellen as sole stockholder, with Eric as the Chief Executive Officer.  An agreement between Eric and Ellen transferred the stock to Eric in December 1997.  Eric now became the sole stockholder.  Bob Krebs and Betty Thompson served as directors and officers of the company until January 1, 2006, when Todd Shatzer, John Ross and Karen Malin were voted as directors and officers.
